The department of Physics was established in 1964, the year in which N.S.S College, Cherthala got affiliated to the University of Kerala as a Junior College. In 1968, BSc. Physics course is launched with the up-gradation of the college. It started functioning with Prof. R. Radhakrishna Menon as the Head of the Department. It has to credit 42 batches of B.Sc. Physics graduates passing out with flying colors till date. The sanctioned strength for B. Sc. (Physics) is 32. The Department of Physics offers complementary courses for students of B Sc Mathematics and B Sc Chemistry. The department possesses two UG labs with the most modern equipments, a dark room, a computer lab, library and reading room etc.
The Faculty members of the department carry out research in many frontier areas which include Theoretical Physics (Non-linear dynamics & Cosmology), Nuclear Physics, Material Science etc. The faculty is also very active in extension programmes, in reaching out to students and the general public, through popular articles, talks, ICT enabled teaching and demonstration lectures for undergraduate students etc.
In 2012, Ms. Mayarani of our department secured the first rank in the University of Kerala and became the pride of our college. The department is proud of its alumni who exceled in their fields such as Mr. C. N. Ramachandran Nair (Hon. Justice, Kerala High Court), Mr. G. Anil (First-class Magistrate), Mr. P. K. Chandramohan (Manager, Ayurveda College, Tripunitura), Mr. B. Balachandran (Sub-divisional Engineer, BSNL), Ms. B. Suma (Former HoD, N.S.S. College, Cherthala) etc.
The Department of Physics will be committed to advancing its role by providing high-quality education to all students and maintaining excellence in research. We strive to provide an educational experience built on the best teaching practices and latest technologies, in an interactive and stimulating learning environment. This will enable the students with a scientific awareness of the world around them, ultimately equipping them with the skills necessary to master critical thinking and the scientific-method. These strengths help them not only become better professionals but also make informed and educated decisions in all aspects of their lives. Although we may come across challenges in getting the resources to implement many of the strategies, we are excited about our future: arrange invited lectures in modern trends in Physics, organize national/international seminars, interdisciplinary lectures & colloquia in human values and provide career guidance and counselling, arrange remedial coaching for the slow learners, conduct short-term courses to develop practical skills in wiring and repairing the household electrical/electronic appliances etc.
